How to get respect

“If we lose love and self respect for each other, this is how we finally die.”
― Maya Angelou

Respect is derived from the Latin word, respectus means “to look back”. Respect is an acknowledgement of the value of the person, beliefs of the person, point of views of the person. It is simply admiration of someone’s abilities, qualities and achievements. Respect is a positive feedback of your overall evaluation of a person’s personality.

Everybody wants respect, but many of don’t know how to actually get it. Respect is not automatic. It is earned; it is gained with dedicated and continuous efforts. If you are honestly serious to get respect, then you should work on it. If you want to be happy and successful, learning how to get respect from others should be important. It is never too late to start earning respect if you feel its lacking.

Here are 10 simple and practical ways to get respect from others.

Seven simple ways to get respect

1.Respect Yourself

“Respect yourself and others will respect you.”― Confucius

If you want to be respected then respect yourself first. If you don’t respect yourself then how can you convince anybody else to do it? Try to understand yourself, the more you will see and appreciate yourself, more you will respect yourself. Consider yourself a valuable person, love yourself, and love your work. Make a list of your positive things and focus on it; it will increase positivity inside you. Don’t focus on your weaknesses and failures. If you consider yourself a failure and always focus on your mistakes, then you will never be able to respect yourself. Always remember, respect yourself and others will respect you.

2. Don’t be easily available

“Don’t be easily available that people can take you for granted .”
― Animesh Jha

It is very good thing to be nice and helpful for the people. But if you are always and easily available and spend more time with the people then people may take you for granted and did not respect you. Things which are rare have more value compared with those things which are easily available. So if some people do not respect you and take you easy, then instead of fighting or arguing make some distance from them. Don’t spend too much time with them. Don’t meet them too often.

This will send a message to them to review their behavior with you.

3. Respect Others

“Men are respectable only as they respect.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson

Respect is a two way process. To earn respect, you must show respect. If you do not show people respect, it is difficult they will respect you. So respect and care people around you. Pay close attention to them, whether it at work or at home. You may disagree to the people, your point of view may be different. But you should try to listen and understand them.

By abusing or making fun of others you can never win their hearts. So treat people with respect, if you want to be respected.

4. Honor what you say

“Keep your words. Honor commitments, and they will double back to honor you. ”
― Bill Rancic

Nobody likes dishonest and unreliable persons. If you like to be respected then honor your commitments. Keep your promises, follow your deadlines and turn your assignments on time. If there is any change, it should be well informed. If you took commitments lightly and make too many promises which you can’t keep. Then nobody will respect you.

5. Be a good listener

“If you want to be listened too, the first step is to listen well yourself. ”
― Julian Treasure

Everybody wants to talk and wants to be listened. But very few knows that if you want to be listened, the first step is to listen well yourself. Listening is a key to effective communication. If you want to get respect then instead of telling your own story, encourage speaker to tell more. Listening to others is a way of giving respect and honor to them. By listening others you make them feel important and validated. And they in turn validate you and give you respect.

So always listen others carefully and try to understand their meanings.

6. Speak up when mistreated

It is good thing to be nice but we should draw a line. We must respect others but should not accept misbehave. Don’t be silent if anybody mistreated you. If you accept misbehave and remain silent when mistreated nobody will respect you. You should define your limits which people should not cross.

7. Appearance

“Appearance is something absolute, but reality is not that way. Everything is independent not absolute.”
― Dalai Lama

If you are better dressed you will experience a better treatment and respect. Your appearance may not mean much to you, but it does to the people who see you every day. You must have seen many social experiments on social media, where a child with beautiful and costly dressing is treated differently as compared with same girl in poor look.

Appearance is the first thing that hits a person and if good then creates a good first impression. We are often very judgmental. If someone appeals to us, we show respect. If don’t appeal, we ignore.
